FAQ

  • What do I wear to my first martial arts class?
    For your first couple of classes, we recommend you wear gym clothes that you don't care too much about. gym clothes are easy to kick and punch in. they can rip because of grappling, so that is why we say, wear some that you don't care about.
  • Do I have to be in good shape before I start?
    No, you will get into shape as you train. We have a series of exercises that you will learn as you progress through the ranking system which will enable you to perform the self defense techniques.
  • What sort of things should I consider when choosing a school?
    Finding a location to train is important. First look for a martial arts school where you feel comfortable. If you are uncomfortable then your motivation could be affected. Second, look for a school where the environment feels like a family. This ties into the first point. lastly, find a place that takes time for sparring especially if you are interested in learning to defend yourself. sparing teaches you to be calm and keep your emotions in check.
  • I am 31 years old, am I too old to start martial arts?"
    No, you are not too old to begin martial arts training. Universal Kempo-Karate regularly has students start from adolecense through their 50's and older. Universal Kempo-Karate is a practical and effective martial art that does not incorporate gymnastics.
  • What is the difference between Tae Kwon Do and Universal Kempo-Karate?
    Tae Kwon Do is a Korean Martial Art that focuses primarily on kicking techniques. Some Tae Kwon Do schools also teach Olympic style fighting. Universal Kempo-Karate is a practical self defense system which trains the student for modern day self defense encounters. Universal-Kempo students are taught to use their hands and feet with multiple strikes to multiple targets on each attacker, in a multiple attack situation.
  • I am very busy with my work schedule, how much time do I need to devote to Universal Kempo-Karate classes?"
    The two 1 hour classes are week are recommended, as is practicing at home.
  • How long does it take to get a black belt?
    In Universal Kempo-Karate, it takes approximately 5 years to reach student black belt.
